Students will try to communicate with imagery in one of the simplest formats....the silhouette. Students are taking digital photographs of the human figure in different poses and manipulating these pictures in photoshop, eliminating any unnecessary details. These silhouettes will be combined to create a new composition, that may also be used to advertise our upcoming Night of the Arts evening.
8th Grade: Identity
Students are studying portraiture and will be composing their own self-portraits in graphite. We began the unit with an activity called "musical portraits" where students collaboratively drew portraits of indivuals from magazine advertisements in charcoal. We will investigate how artists explore and communicate the big idea of Indentity in their work. We will also visit the portrait gallery at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art across the street.
7th Grade: Identity
Students are using the process of relief printmaking to investigate their own identities and physical appearances. We will be creating a series of self-portrait prints that will later be arranged on a three-dimensional cube structure.
6th Grade: Communication
Students will be finishing a three dimensional paper sculpture and will be beginning a two dimensional painting/woven collage with a similar theme...nonobjective art. The main objective of this unit is to familiarize students with the visual building blocks of most art and design....the elements and principles of art/design. Our last sculpture project focussed on shape, line, and form. This new woven collage of nonobjective paintings will emphasize implied and visual texture as well as visual movement/ compositional balance, and contrast.
