Suggested Routine for Children in Grades

Kindergarten to Second

 

Daily Routine (approx. 10 minutes)

  • Count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s.
  • Talk about the weather.
  • Create a calendar.  How many days until ….
  • Talk about the current time.  What time will your daily activities occur today?
  • Sing a song.
  • Do a dance.
  • Draw or color a picture.
  • Build something.
  • Create something.

 

Reading (approx. 20-30 minutes)

  • Read Aloud with Comprehension Questions
  • Independent reading
  • Read to partner

 

Word Study (approx. 10-15 minutes)

  • Spelling
  • Vocabulary
  • Phonics

 

Writing (approx. 15-20 minutes)

  • Write or draw about
    • Favorite part of a story, television show, sport event, video game
    • Favorite character in a story, movie, television show, cartoon, video game
    • Main idea of a story, movie, television show, cartoon, video game
    • Journaling about the weather, daily activities, pet, family, video game

 

Math (approx. 20-30 minutes)

  • Practice fluency (counting, writing numbers, addition, and subtraction)
  • Sorting and organizing objects
  • Discovering patterns
  • Drawing and identifying shapes

 

Science (approx. 10 minutes)

  • Science projects at home
  • Create tables and charts of the weather and temperature
  • Journal about observations outside
  • Fun science activities

Social Studies (approx. 10 minutes)

  • Create a schedule for the day or week.
  • Draw a map of your home, community, state, or country
  • Create a rewards or token system for doing chores or good deeds
  • Explore PA History (https://explorepahistory.com/teach.php)
  • Discover the world (https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/)
  • Talk about service careers in the community
  • Discuss and explain money and the cost of commonly bought products in the home

 

Art, Library, Music, Physical Education, and STEAM (throughout each day)

 

 

Most importantly, do not forget about play and discovery.
