Yearly Health Screenings
Each school year, students in all grades will undergo state mandated health screenings. These screenings are performed to ensure the health of the student body.
Heights and Weights are provided in grades K-12
Vision Screenings are provided in all grades K-12
Hearing screenings are provided in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 7, and 11.
Scoliosis screenings are provided for students in 7th grade. (This is performed by your family physician with their 6th grade physical.)
These screenings are a very general testing which is designed to detect any possible problems.
For vision screening, students are shown a vision testing chart and asked to read letters or identify symbols at a specific distance. If they are unable to do so, a vision referral letter will be sent home advising parents to have their child examined by an eye doctor/optometrist/ophthalmologist.
For hearing screenings, students will listen to tones with headphones. If they fail to respond to those tones, they will be retested in approximately 2 weeks. This allows for any illness that could be interfering with hearing to resolve. If a student is still unable to pass the hearing screening, parents will receive a referral letter advising them to take their child to receive a more thorough evaluation.
As always, please contact the school nurse if you have any questions about these screenings or if you receive a referral letter that you do not understand.
Physicals are needed in grades K/1, 6, and 11.
Dental exams are needed in grades K/1, 3, and 7.
